>  Arts Makers Aotearoa  Brand Design & Website Build / Animations / Newsletter / SM Campaigns / Hand Book Lovely was tasked with creating a new resource website for Arts Makers Aotearoa which is an artist support network that we’ve been involved with since its formation. With next to no budget, but free creative reign, Lovely sourced as much relevant Creative Commons imagery as we could muster to help provide some visual stimulus for it’s most visual of patrons. More recently, we designed ‘Hand Book’, a collection of essays and artworks exploring what it means to be an art maker in Aotearoa. This free printed pukapuka – by artists for artists – was made possible by a grant from Creative New Zealand. To view a digital version of the book click here.

> PPG Paints  Tease & Launch A0 Street Poster CampaignLovely was PPG Paint Australia’s port of call when it came to designing and launching their range of bespoke paint colours crafted by New Zealand Makers. We worked in tandem with web designers Sons & Co. to come up with a cohesive look even though the job was split distinctly in two camps. Luckily Sons & Co dug Lovely’s nod to Josef Albers and we managed to create a complimentary launch campaign for the ‘Makers’ range.

> Hilary Ord  Website Design & Build / Business Cards / Animation
Website and calling cards to launch Hilary Ord’s Mediation and Advocacy Business. Lovely steered clear of the ghastly generic stock image route that is normally associated with mediation websites, opting instead for a more graphic approach to convey the coming together of parties at odds.

> Locky Dock  Logo Design / Digital Bike Route Maps / Website Design + Oversee BuildBig Street Bikers in conjunction with Waka Kotahi have installed Locky Dock’s – lockable electric bike recharging stations throughout Aotearoa. Lovely was given the brief to design some digital maps highlighting the various city bike routes – a great green initiative which we’re proud to lend a hand with. More recently we redesigned their website and did a logo refresh at the same time.

> Femisphere  Website Design & BuildOnline presence to showcase artists Judy Darragh and Imogen Taylor’s feminist art zine. As the ‘free’ annually published booklets were always quickly snapped up they required a website where everyone could view and read each zine on any platform.

> Cotto (now Otto) Restaurant  Logo / Menu Design / Website Design & Build
Our concept to Cotto was to showcase an artist every few months on their menu due to it’s location in the hub of art galleries on K’Rd. In exchange for having a stable of contemporary artists grace their menu, Cotto provides a generous contra to dine at their establishment – a nice synergy as the often financially strapped artists get a few tasty meals out, and to gather a little exposure of their work. Massive thanks to the artists who’ve graced the menus so far (in order): Stella Corkery, Paul Hartigan, Imogen Taylor, Judith Darragh, Nicola Farquhar, Kirstin Carlin, Greta Anderson, Anton Parsons, Lonnie Hutchinson, Joyce Campbell, Robbie Fraser, Ann Shelton, Dan Arps, Cat Fooks, John Brown, Saskia Leek.

Little Prick Acupuncture  Logo / Business Card / Website Design / Signage
When a friend, who’s short on stature but not on a sense of humour, asked us to rebrand his practise we jumped at the chance. As the fun aspect was all in the client’s name the design approach was to keep it simple by using hand etched Chinese medical styled illustrations that quickly relay the nature of the business.

/ Music + Art + Politick

–––

Here’s a few fun projects we had the pleasure of working on...

>  SJD  Album Artwork
When given an open brief by Sean Donnelly for his ‘Songs from a Dictaphone’ album Lovely had a play with the title, seeing where cassette tape could be pushed out to. Hours of fun were had dismantling old tapes with photographer Becky Nunes, from which we created a tribe of tape creatures for the accompanying CD booklet.

>  Jefferson Belt  Album Artwork
For Jefferson Belt’s album of 60’s inspired moog music Lovely looked at old stereo sound albums from the period. After stumbling across the cover image of legendary table tennis hustler Marty Reisman Lovely contacted Marty and got his kind permission to use the photograph in exchange for a handful of CD’s. Thanks Mr Reisman, rest in power.

>  Endless Boogie  Promo Poster
When we heard one of our favourite American bands were touring Australia Lovely got in touch with a mate in the industry and persuaded him to bring the band over to NZ. Lovely happily did the promo poster in exchange for a bunch of comps. The gig was great, and we got to party back at Lovely HQ with Paul ‘Top Dollar’ Major and the band afterwards. Boogie on down.

> Rebel Soul Records  Promo Poster
Poster to advertise a winter bi-weekly record swap meet complete with optional roast dinner at The Thirsty Dog on K’Rd. Sadly the event never really took off, either too many vegetarians, or not enough record hounds.

> Mangere Arts Centre  Sopolemalama Filipe Tohi  Promo Poster / Catalogue
Lovely had the pleasure of working with James Pinker, then head of the Mangere Arts Centre, designing the exhibition collateral for master stone carver Sopolemalama.

–––

> Mangere Arts Centre   Lonnie Hutchinson  Promo Poster / Catalogue
Another catalogue for Mangere Arts Centre, this time we focused on the idea of time with a hand rendered typeface and time lines. The rest of the design was kept sparse allowing the work to take centre stage, as it should.

>  RockEnrol   Street Poster / Flyer / Social Media
Lovely did a bunch of work for NGO RockEnrol in the 2017 general election and were asked to get involved again for the local body elections in Auckland. The main focus of the brief was to make 18-35 year-olds aware of the ‘Pop-Up Enrol and Vote’ events, encouraging them to do exactly that. Instead of doing the usual shouty political styled messaging Lovely opted to focus on a recent survey RockEnrol had done which highlighted the main concerns for this target demographic. We combined this with some friendly character driven illustrations as opposed to a more costly photographic campaign. This approach helped keep the NGO’s costs down and provide content for social media by addressing the five key concerns on an individual basis.

> Jacinda Ardern  2011 Election Campaign Flyers / Billboards
One of many pro-bono jobs Lovely has taken on, this time because as we wanted Jacinda Ardern to be elected for Auckland Central. Unfortunately it was not to be, though little were we to know two elections later Jacinda would become New Zealand’s Prime Minister! Definitely one of the more bold graphic approaches out there when it comes to advertising a potential MP.

–––

> Internet Party  2014 Election Campaign Poster / Moment of Truth Event Poster
Ok so Lovely can be a bit loose when it comes to supporting left-aligned poilitcal parties, for fair balance we’ve also done pro-bono work for the Green Party and Mana Party. Whether you loved or hated them, there’s no denying the Internet Party spiced up what was an already given election. As head of design, this was definitely one of the more interesting, fun and outright bizarre six month contracts we’ve ever taken on. Not to mention the remuneration was outstanding thanks to a very rich German hell bent on over-throwing the government.

/ Logos + Branding

–––

Lovely loves logos, though hell no on clothes! People walking around being free billboards for companies is so naff, there’s far cooler ways to get ones brand noticed.

–––

We also love giving face to a company, aka brand identity design. Nothing beats bringing a fledging wee brand to life and watching it grow over the years.

> Luxe Luxe   Logo / Jewellers Makers Mark / Website Concept
Lovely was brought on to develop the Luxe Luxe jewellery brand look and feel, coming up with the name for the client also. After several months of development the client ended up going with a different logo, one that Lovely also designed, but this was our preferred version out of the five originally presented.
